                         French Conjunctions  

 

Conjunctions are words joining two or more words or phrases together. 
Coordinating conjunctions link two phrases of equal value: et (and), ou(or), mais (but), ni… ni… (neither… nor)

 

Parlez-vous français ou anglais? (do you speak French or English?)

 

Subordinating conjunctions link a subordinate clause with the main clause: que (that), bien que (although), si (if), quand (when), car (for, because), comme (as, since), pour que (so that), parce que (because)

Je vois que tu parles bien en français (I see that you speak French well)

que (that), bien que (although), si (if),quand (when), car (for, because),

 

 

French Negation

 

Usually to form negative expressions in French a (ne + verb + pas) is used, je ne peux pas (I can’t), elle ne veut pas (she doesn’t want to), je ne parle pas bien français (I don’t speak French well). So (ne…pas) could simply mean (don’t, not, no).

 

For compound verbs, example: tu n’as pas étudié (you haven’t studied), a form such as (ne + auxiliary verb + pas + past participle) is used.

Other negation constructions are:

ne...plus (no more) je ne te crois plus (I believe you no more)

ne...rien (nothing), je ne comprends rien. (I don’t understand anything, I understand nothing)

ne...jamais (never), je n’ai jamais entendu de Linguanaut (I have never heard of Linguanaut)

Some more constructions are:

ne...pas encore (not yet), ne...guère (hardly, barely), ne...que (only)
